About Me

When my dad tells the story of my birth he always starts by saying that he found out that my mom was pregnant the day that he quit his job. My mom tells the story about how my dad drove 15 miles per hour to the hospital, pale as a ghost, with a grip so tight on the steering wheel that it left permanent marks. She concludes by telling about being left at the hospital lobby while my dad went home to get a check because, "they told him we couldn't leave until he paid."
Although I love hearing my parents joke about my birth, my story starts before that in the 70's when my parents were teenagers. My dad was my moms brothers best friend. They met, fell in love, and got married in March 1978 (during spring break of my mothers senior year in high school)!

Seven years later I was born.

Four years after that, my brother was born. He was what they now call an "unnecesarean," but that's another story.

I graduated from high school and pursued a bachelor's degree in anthropology from USF.

In August 2010, I started my first semester of midwifery school at the direct-entry program at Florida School of Traditional Midwifery.

I would consider myself passionate about women's health and the humanization of birth. Evidence based, mother/baby friendly maternity care needs to the golden standard and the aim of all health care providers. The cesarean rate needs to be lowered to meet WHO recommendations. VBAC's need to be made available to all women. Certified professional midwives and choice of birth locations needs to be made available to all women. I believe that we will not have a solution to the maternity health care crisis in America until midwives are truly valued for their expertise in normal birth nor until obstetricians start practicing evidence based care.
My mom is my greatest supporter and my biggest inspiration!
